They are pearls of wisdom we always seem to go back to. The great Rush Limbaugh used to say that Democrats will tell you, which Republican candidates they are afraid of. There is clearly no one they are more afraid of than former President Donald Trump. In 2024, they might be a little more afraid of the fact that they are stuck with Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and a Democrat bench that the word “short,” doesn’t begin to describe. But the truth is, there is really nothing that scares Democrats more than black Republicans and conservatives. Democrats have spent at least fifty years, telling black Americans, that Republicans hate them, and are constantly trying to find ways to take their rights away from them. It has made black Americans a reliable voting bloc that remain so today. Democrats have also promised the moon to black voters for roughly the same amount of time. But a funny thing began to happen within the last 20 years or so. Black voters began to examine just exactly what it was that Democrats had done for them. That list also turned out to be short.
But in 2024, Democrats may have a whole other set of problems. On Monday, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott announced his run for the 2024 GOP nomination for President. While it might sound absurd now, put Trump’s double-digit lead over his next closest opponent aside, and you have a guy with a great life story, that appeals to all. So how big of a threat will the media think Tim Scott really is? It all depends on how much energy they expend to take him out and how early. It could go one of two ways, the Larry Elder treatment, or the more involved Herman Cain treatment.
The 2024 election is eighteen months away, an eternity and then some in the world of politics. Currently, Donald Trump is far and away the frontrunner polling at 56.3%, and the next closest, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is also expected to announce his White House run this week, is at 19.4%. Scott is at 1.8%. Anything can happen, and it gives Scott plenty of time to make some headway. The media will definitely pay attention to him. As a black Republican, and the sole black Republican Senator, he will automatically be treated differently by the media, and asked different questions. They are never quite sure what to do with black conservatives because they cannot use the standard “Republicans are racist” narrative, and this renders them virtually inoperable. But because he is not Donald Trump, the media may decide to “go easy” on Scott and do nothing more than take the “black face of white supremacy” crown away from Larry Elder, who is himself a presidential candidate, and earned that title while running for Governor of California against Gavin Newsom and declare Tim Scott the younger black face of white supremacy. But because the media tends to panic when they see black people not only voice interest in a Republican candidate, but a black Republican candidate, they may decide that Tim Scott must go, and will initiate a Herman Cain operation.
For those who do not remember the take down of Herman Cain, let’s review. Cain, an Atlanta businessman, most notably the CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, ran for president in 2012. Cain was a precursor of sorts to Trump. A businessman, an outsider who had not previously run for office. At one point he was essentially tied with frontrunner, now Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), his popularity stemming from a plan that would overhaul the tax system. But as Cain jumped in the polls, women began to come forward with claims of sexual harassment and extramarital affairs. The final blow to his campaign came when one woman came forward who claimed to have had a 13-year long relationship with Cain, and that he had provided her financial assistance. Cain denied all the allegations, but the damage was done, and Cain suspended his campaign.
If the media decides that Tim Scott gets the Herman Cain treatment, it could be time consuming, but delivers a double whammy. Tim Scott is a single man. If enough women can be dug up to declare that Scott sexually harassed them, or they had a relationship with him, it first portrays him as a hypocrite. Early in his political career, Scott was an advocate for Sexual Risk Avoidance Abstinence Education. A devout Christian, Scott has never made it a secret that he believed that sex before marriage was a sin, but also admitted that he had fallen short himself in that belief. If the Cain treatment is employed, it also portrays him as a serial harasser of women.
Here is yet another reason that Tim Scott will scare the pants off Democrats/the media. We all know that in the world of politics, money talks. Scott has already announced that his campaign will be spending around $6 million in Iowa and New Hampshire beginning Wednesday on ads that will run through the first Republican primary debate in late August 2024. Currently, Scott has a total of around $22 million on hand. A black Republican candidate already sends chills up the collective spine of Democrats/the media. A well-funded black Republican candidate will have them reaching for the smelling salts.
Tim Scott has a life story that is quintessentially American. The son of a single mother, with a grandfather who could not read or write, and picked cotton in the Jim Crow south. During his announcement, Scott said that “Joe Biden and the radical left are attacking every single rung of the ladder that helped me climb.” He added, “When I cut your taxes, they called me a prop. When I refunded the police, they called me a token. When I pushed back on President Biden, they even called me the n-word.” He also rightly stated, “Today, I am living proof that America is the land of opportunity, and not a land of oppression. As Tim Scott concluded his presidential announcement, he called himself, “the candidate the far-left fears most.” It is a pretty safe bet that it won’t take long for the Democrats/the media to telegraph, just how fearful they are.
