Former Clinic Employee Blows the Lid Off Pediatric Transgender Industry
Sometimes heroes are the unlikeliest people and are found in the unlikeliest places. That could easily be said of Jamie Reed. In fact, she may be the first one to say it of herself. Especially because she may become a hero to people, she has very little in common with, people who are politically to the right of her. Jamie Reed describes herself as “a 42-year-old queer woman, married to a trans man, and to the left of Bernie Sanders.” Until recently, Jamie Reed was an employee at the Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. One of the nation’s most prestigious universities affiliated with one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation. However, while this partnership may have been financially beneficial for the university and the hospital, in no way does it seem like it was beneficial for children.
In an explosive expose in a publication called The Free Press, Reed described her four years as a case manager at the clinic. She said that, during her employment with the clinic, she felt as if she had been “brainwashed” into believing she was helping kids with gender issues, but when she left, she felt like she was doing the exact opposite, helping to destroy the young lives of her patients. Some of the procedures and practices of the clinic were truly disturbing for both patients and staff. Reed claims that there were virtually no formal protocols for treating the highly specialized group of patients that she and her coworkers were caring for. Reed also says others among her group of approximately eight coworkers at the clinic had the same questions surrounding the treatment of the gender dysphoria patients at the clinic. But that anyone who spoke up or asked the wrong questions was immediately labeled a homophobe.
Reed says that the majority of teenagers that came to the clinic had not yet had any sort of sexual experiences, and that because of that, there was a good chance that they would not have known yet, what sort of sexual identity they would ultimately have as adults. But that didn’t stop the trans zealots at the clinic. All it took, Reed said, was one or two visits with a therapist, and they had made the decision to transition. Reed also claims that the clinic was seeing patients from Children’s Hospital inpatient psychiatric unit and would have been aware that those patients had already been deemed mentally unstable. Most of those patients were prescribed hormone medication that can cause infertility. Reed also spoke of the rapid increase in transgender cases, especially girls at the clinic. In the four years of Reed’s employment, calls about transitioning went from around 10 a month to around 50. The Washington University Transgender Center also knew that weeding out noncompliant employees was paramount. Reed said she went from consistently positive job performance reviews to negative ones. The final straw came during a retreat with her colleagues in the summer of 2022. Doctors told Reed and a colleague publicly that they had to “stop questioning the medicine and the science as well as their authority.” If that wasn’t clear enough, an administrator promptly cleared up any ambiguity saying, “Get on board or get out.” Reed says it became clear to her this was the reason for the retreat.
St. Louis Children’s Hospital through Washington University called Reed’s claims “disturbing,” and issued a statement saying, “We are alarmed by the allegations reported in the article published by The Free Press describing practices and behaviors the author says she witnessed while employed at the University’s Transgender Center. We are taking this matter very seriously and have already begun the process of looking into the situation to ascertain the facts. As always, our highest priority is the health and well-being of our patients. We are committed to providing compassionate, family-centered care to all of our patients and we hold our medical practitioners to the highest professional and ethical standards.”
“Industry” does indeed seem to be an appropriate description for this rapidly emerging practice. And Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are not the first to have their practices put under the microscope. In September of 2022, Vanderbilt University Medical Center came under fire for their questionable activities after it was discovered that a doctor had persuaded the Medical Center to enter into gender transition care because it was “a big money-maker.” Those revelations prompted Republican lawmakers to demand investigations.
Jamie Reed may be a bit different than your garden variety progressive. She wrote down what she witnessed and took it to Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. When speaking of that she said, “He is a Republican. I am a progressive. But the safety of children should not be a matter for our culture wars.” It has also prompted Missouri Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) to launch an investigation into the Washington University Transgender Center. Hawley has put the Center on notice with a letter instructing them that “Starting immediately, your institutions must take steps to preserve all records, written and electronic, regarding gender-related treatments performed on minors since the opening of the Center.” The letter goes on to say that “accountability is coming.” Among the records Hawley is requesting are the Center’s use of puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and any cases where there has been “serious medical complications.” Hawley is also inquiring about the Center’s sources of federal and non-federal funding for gender-related treatments. Hawley described the Center’s practices on social media, “this is a sickening account of forced sterilization and child abuse.”
If these practices are going on at places like Vanderbilt and Washington Universities, they are going on at other places too. Jamie Reed is exactly right, this is not a right or left, Republican or Democrat issue. All Americans should demand to know why has this industry, let’s call it what it is, of mutilating children, mentally, emotionally, and physically, sprung up seemingly overnight? And why do they feel the need to stifle any opposition to their heinous activities? What are they trying to hide? And most importantly, we need to stop being afraid of this fringe group of people and fight back. As with a lot of other issues, it is time for those on the right to stop being nice. In this case, the lives of your children may depend on it.
