The Late Great American Republic
If we read enough about the founding of this nation, we learn that it was not exactly cut and dried, a done deal. Plenty of Americans wanted nothing to do with independence. Perhaps they wanted the security that they believed came with being under British rule. Perhaps they thought America had no chance in a war with the world’s most powerful military at the time. Perhaps it was a combination of those things and much more. Then there were those who had had enough of the tyranny and despotism of King George. They were tired of England noticing their presence when there were taxes to be raised, but little notice at any other time. They also truly believed that the independence of the nation was worth fighting for. So, they did fight, and many died, but they achieved independence, and the idea that free people could govern themselves began.
The indictment of former President Donald Trump may not sound like it belongs in a conversation about the founding of the nation, but upon closer examination, nothing could be further from the truth. The founding of America has always been described as an idea, and it is. The idea that people cannot only govern themselves, but they can debate and disagree, and may the best man win. From the beginning, we have been on different sides in different political parties. Whigs, Democratic-Republicans, and Bull Moose, they have all come and gone. But even with different ideas of how to make things better, what seemed to bring everyone together, was love of country.
Fast forward 250 years. For one party, love of country doesn’t seem to enter into it anymore. For Democrats, power, position, and winning at all costs are the driving force. The indictment of Donald Trump has Democrats and the left simply giddy. It is what they have been working towards since that June 2015 day he came down the escalator at Trump Tower. We can go into the particulars of the case. How Trump allegedly made hush money payments to an adult film star named Stormy Daniels so details about an alleged affair between the two that both parties have said for the last few years never happened. It is a web of misdemeanors being twisted into felonies, and an expired statute of limitations thrown in for good measure. But where we have now arrived in America should scare the daylights out of anyone, of any party, out of their wits. And if it continues, it very well could spell the end of our Democratic Republic.
The story of the 2020 presidential election is yet one more thing that divides Americans. One side is convinced that cheating and fraud took place on a massive scale. The other side says that if you even dare to state a theory or opinion that would suggest that the election was not anything but completely and totally fair, you should be shut down and not allowed to speak. Wait a minute? What about free speech? It seems that it all depends on who you vote for, or if your name is Donald Trump. When Donald Trump first ran for president in 2016, he was an outsider to Washington D.C. He was not a politician, never ran for office. He was a businessman. And as such, he knew that in the business world, a.k.a., real life, you were expected to produce results, as opposed to politics, where no real results are ever required. The Democrat candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden, barely made it across the nominating finish line. He was weak, a career machine politician, a gaffe machine and all-around buffoon. But fortunately for Democrats, along came COVID, and voila, Joe Biden had an excuse to “campaign” from his basement.
But now, COVID is a bad memory, and Joe Biden has a record. The Democrat Party knows it cannot defeat Donald Trump and Republicans in the arena of ideas. Is criminal prosecution Democrats new election winning strategy? Does it matter that this is the first time in U.S. history that a former president has been indicted, and that it might not be good for the country? The answer is no, it doesn’t matter to a party who is full of people who appear to despise America, want to bring her down a peg, and appear to want to turn it into Venezuela. Do we ever hear Democrats talk about freedom, liberty, individual rights, what is good for the country? They only talk about those things when it can help them to attain more power. But maybe the most ominous question, how do so many people nurse such an intense hatred for one man?
Donald Trump spoke on Tuesday evening after returning to Mar-a-Lago from New York to a very large crowd of supporters. He put what is happening to him, and by extension, the American people very clearly saying, “The only crime I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it.” This is election interference on an unimaginable scale. Mail in voting and ballot drop boxes were just the beginning for a group of people who really can no longer masquerade as a political party. They are a gang of ruthless lawless thugs bent on wresting power from the American people any way they can. And if America truly now has a two-tiered system of justice, we can no longer lecture other banana republics about democracy. If you have any doubt that this is nothing more than a massive election interference attempt, Donald Trump’s next scheduled court appearance is December 4. Roughly one month before the start of the Republican primaries.
